The story

In seventh grade, my dad was looking at domains and I told him to try ieatchicken.com. Somehow it was available. We bought it and put our projects there, including a recipe search and a nearby chicken finder. Mostly, though, it became a home for our games.

Christmas Tree Clicker was the favorite. I loved Cookie Clicker, so I wanted to make something like it. Around Christmas, my friends started telling their friends, and everyone was trying to get the most money. One friend’s dad is number one. That’s still really funny to say.

Behind the build Tools & technical details

Linux · Self-hosted server · PHP · Browser games · Global leaderboards

The site runs on a Linux server in my garage, with PHP and shared leaderboard storage. Our Unity games are playable in the browser. Christmas Tree Clicker is also on Android.

The hard part

There was a bug where watching an ad doubled your money. People kept doing it until their scores got so big that we had to change how we stored the numbers in the leaderboard. I did not expect people to take a little Christmas game that seriously.

What came out of it

There are 5,297 players across the eight public leaderboards for games I made or helped make, counting each game on its own. Seeing people I know on those boards is still my favorite part.
